For someone who has changed schools every year in high school, it’s a relief to have finally found her feet.
ACG Senior College is Lily Powell’s fourth high school – and she couldn’t be happier.
“At other schools you’re more influenced by your friends,” she explained. “But the sort of people who come to this school are so accepting of everyone – they don’t buy into the usual teenage stuff. We just want to help each other to succeed. I don’t think I’ve been happier than I am now.”
Outside the classroom, Lily, 16, is a successful actress who has had roles in shows like Step Dave, Westside and Power Rangers. She was disappointed by previous schools’ unwillingness to help her manage the demands of school with her busy work life – and at one point even turned to correspondence school.
But the small classes and options for multi-level learning at ACG Senior College – more like a university environment – give her the independence and flexibility to allow her to jump at acting opportunities.
“If you’re going to be away from school, you need to be organised and disciplined and know how to manage your time properly, but you’re given independence here to learn how to do that and the support to keep on top of everything,” she said.
At school, History is her favourite subject. She credits her teacher Miss King for helping her want to learn and appreciates that all her teachers have authority but treat their students as adults, creating a safe, progressive learning environment.
As for the future, Lily loves Psychology and is fascinated with the Law, which she would like to study when she leaves school. But she also wants to continue acting.
“I wanted to take a break from it because it’s a very hard industry to make a solid career out of. But Power Rangers gave me a foot in the door of America and I made friends with a lot of American actors and I realised how much I enjoyed it. I had stopped believing in myself, but now I feel I have the motivation and determination to pursue it,” she explained.
Meantime, auditions have just taken place for Senior College’s production and Lily can’t wait to get involved. Watch this space.
