Student Success

Jonathan D’Souza

Our Year 11 student, Jonathan D’Souza has won 2nd prize at the prestigious 2016 Rönisch Auckland Secondary Schools Piano Competition.

Jonathan represented our school against 17 other schools, and won $400 for the school, alongside his individual prize.

He says he loves how piano playing can capture different moods and emotions. “Combining the percussive and melodic sounds allows you to be able to express so many different tones, stories and emotions through various pieces of music,” he explains.

Earlier this year, Jonathan competed in the Tauranga Performing Arts Piano Competitions, winning all three trophies for his age group.

As well as music, the talented student loves science and he may go on to study medicine when he leaves our school. But he says the piano will always be part of his future.

“It’s a privilege to be able to share music with those around me, and it’s an experience that cannot be replicated, so I hope to grow, learn and share more as I move forward.”

Our Associate Principal Graham Gottard said Jonathan is a highly talented all-rounder. “He not only excels musically, but in the classroom as well. He has been chosen to represent the student body as a student leader next year and we are confident that he will bring the same passion and dedication to his leadership role that he brings to his musical performances.”

With his sister Azeria, Jonathan shares his music videos on his YouTube channel Defying Ashes.
